1. hocus-pocus对“哈利·波特”（Harry Potter）迷来说应该是不会陌生的，魔术师每次在变戏法前口中念的咒语正是这个重叠词。早在17世纪初，hocus-pocus就已是魔术师惯用的咒语，词本身并没有什么意义。
据认为，hocus-pocus是仿天主教弥撒仪式中神父所说的一句拉丁语Hoc est corpus 'This is the body'（此乃圣体）杜撰的套话，先是作为咒语，继而转义为“魔术师”或“魔术”，再以后又喻指“把戏”、“花招”或“骗人的鬼话”。
另有一说与上说大同小异。英国国王詹姆斯一世（James I, 1566-1625）在位期间，有个名噪一时的魔术师在变戏法时口中总是要念Hocus-pocus，toutus talontus，vade celerita jubes这一长串无甚意义的拉丁文咒语，因此人们都称他为Hocus-pocus，反倒把他的大名给忘了。尔后，其他魔术师也都取其中的头一个词hocus-pocus作为咒语。久而久之，hocus-pocus便被用以喻指“花招”或“故弄玄虚的言辞”。
18世纪出现的hoax（骗局；恶作剧；欺骗）一词很可能是hocus-pocus的变体，是从hocus-pocus缩略而来的。（参见hanky-panky）
