英语词源趣谈（庄和诚）

1. currency是current的派生词。按字面义，current的意思是running，而currency的意思则是running money。它们源自拉丁语动词currere 'to run'（流）。该词原指液体的流动，在中世纪拉丁语中转指从一地流通到另一地的钱，进入古法语后变为corir。其变化词形之一的currant进入中古英语，最后演变为current。current在现代英语用于“现时的”、“现行的”、“水流”、“电流”等义，但早在15世纪时current也有与金钱流通相关的意思。此义后来转到了currency。在17世纪末，当currency开始在英国使用时，它仅指硬币，因为当时还没有纸币。通货之所以称currency，因为它是running money（流通货币），也是the current medium of exchange（流通的交换媒介）。currency用于此义的最早文字记录见于美国政治家和科学家富兰克林（Benjamin Franklin, 1706-1790）1729年的著作中。除指“货币”和“通货”之外，currency也可表示“流通”或“传播”。
