英语词源趣谈（庄和诚）
1. 该词16世纪始用于英语，它来自中世纪拉丁语dictiōnārium 'collection of words'（词集）。但若再进一步追本溯源，我们就会发现它和另一词diction（措词）都源于拉丁语dictiō（词）和dīcere（说）。英语中有不少带有拉丁词根dic-或dict-的词，其终极词源都是dīcere（说），都与“说”或“话”有关。例如benediction是“祝福”（a saying of good words），其前缀bene-是well（好）的意思；malediction是“诅咒”（a saying of bad words），其前缀mal-是“恶”或“坏”的意思。再如contradict意为“顶撞”（speak against or the opposite of another's words），其前缀contra-是“反对”或“与……相反”的意思；predict意为“预言”（say beforehand），其前缀pre-是“前”的意思。又如dictate意为“口授”或“听写”，其派生词dictator则指“独裁者”；verdict意为“裁决”，其中ver(e)是“真实地”的意思；edict意为“法令”、“敕令”，其前缀e- = ex-，含有“（话）向外（传）”之义；dictum意为“名言”或“格言”（a saying or pronouncement），等等。
